Steps to Become a Notary in Texas

To become a notary in Texas, you must first meet the state’s eligibility requirements: be 18 years of age or older, be a Texas resident, and have no final conviction for a felony or a crime involving moral turpitude. You must also complete the notary education requirement through the Texas Secretary of State’s SOS Notary Portal, submit a notary application along with a four-year, $10,000 Texas notary bond, and pay the $21 notary application filing fee.

The American Association of Notaries is approved by the Texas Secretary of State to electronically submit notary applications and notary bonds on behalf of Texas notary applicants. Choose an option below to get started.

Option 1 – Fast Approval (Recommended)

Complete your notary application on our website and order your $10,000 notary bond and supplies. After you complete the required notary education, we will electronically submit your notary application and bond to the Texas Secretary of State and pay the $21 filing fee on your behalf. Applications submitted to the Texas Secretary of State by AAN typically do not require manual review of your notary bond, which can speed up approval. Total cost of the bond and filing fee: $71.

Option 2 – Approval Time Varies (Notary Bond Only)

Order a four-year, $10,000 notary bond. Immediately after checkout, download your notary bond and follow the step-by-step instructions to complete your education and submit your notary bond and application directly on the Texas Secretary of State’s website. Using Option 2 requires manual review of your notary bond by the Texas Secretary of State, so approval time depends on the state’s backlog and may take longer. Bond cost: $50.
